The sights and sounds of heavy vehicles are nothing new to the Ubi industrial estate, yet at around 10pm every night, a select group of hawkers make their way to a carpark long Ubi Avenue 3 to setup this unique open air vegetable night market.
From chilis to lotus roots, cabbages to even durians, the produce here arrive by the truckloads from Malaysia, and are sold in bulk by the basket (at least 1kg per order) to mainly hawker-stall and restaurant owners who are attracted by the substantially lower prices. Many of them spend close to $100-$200 on each trip.
As for homeowners, some hawkers are still willing to sell items with a minimum order of half a kilogram.
The market, which occupies over 30 carpark lots, only managed to find a permanent place about three years ago and is now one of three vegetable wholesale centres in Singapore, the others being at Toa Payoh East and the more famous Pasir Panjang wholesale centre.
The market is located at the carpark along Ubi Avenue 3 between The Frontier and industrial blocks (3005-3014). It is open from 11pm-7am daily.
